History

In midst of the Friedewald forest that was rich in game, Duke Moritz of Saxony established a hunting lodge on a granite knoll in the years 1542 to 1546, that attracted Electors and Kings at all times. The castle chapel built in the late 17th century belongs to the most impressive constructions in early Baroque style in Saxony.

Friedrich August the first, commonly known as Friedrich the Strong, had master builder Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann redesign the castle from 1723 to 1733. Including the surroundings, Moritzburg castle became a representative hunting and pleasure lodge.

Today the castle's rooms are splendidly furnished, show precious paintings and valuable porcelain from Meissen as part of a museum. Numerous antlers indicate the castle's significant history as hunting place of the Wettiner aristocrats.

Ferien und Urlaub am Schloss

The castle's pond houses offer a special quality for lodging for tourists. Located at the “Schlossinsel“ (castle island) these holiday homes invite to lodge in Moritzburg in a very exclusive way. They are furnished in high quality and offer solutions for guest numbers (1-2 person holiday home and 3-4 persons holiday home).

Thus, from April to October guests may reside directly in the historic centre of Moritzburg and enjoy (especially in the evening hours) a romantic silence distant from daily tourism.
